Green Fields

Translated from Grine felder (1916) by Peretz Hirschbein.

A pastoral romance with a happy ending.  Two farmers with marriageable daughters compete to win the same innocent wandering scholar for a son-in-law.

In Yiddish, this remains a perennial favorite.  The Yiddish film version, adapted by Hirschbein and filmed on Long Island in 1931 under the direction of Jacob Ben-Ami, is often screened.

The script is available in God, Man, and Devil: Yiddish Plays in Translation, Syracuse University Press, 1999 ( amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and Syracuse University Press).
